£150 energy rebate payments to be made from this week

From this week, Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council will start to pay the £150 council tax rebates to HBBC residents who pay by direct debit, through the government's energy bill rebate scheme. Like all councils, the council is working hard to ensure that payments are received well within the government's deadlines.

The stipulation that councils need to make a payment rather than simply crediting council tax accounts has resulted in both significant additional work and the need to make changes to our IT systems. However, 28,000 payments to council taxpayers are now underway and we expect to have made the majority of payments to those in Bands A to D who pay by direct debit by the end of May.

There will be instances where we have not been able to make a direct payment because, for example, the name on the direct debit does not match exactly with the liable person for council tax. If this is the case, the resident will be sent a letter to collect their payment from the post office.

For anyone who has not received their payment direct into their account by the first week in June or who does do not pay by direct debit, it is safe to assume that the payment will be made through the post office. These letters will start to be sent within the next three weeks but please be assured that nobody who qualifies for the rebate will be missed or forgotten so we would ask that residents bear with us and continue to visit our website for further updates rather than telephoning. We will also continue to share updates on social media and post FAQs on our website.

The government expects local authorities to have made payments under this scheme by September 2022. Of course, we appreciate that people are facing a cost-of-living crisis now and we are doing all we can to make these payments as soon as possible.

For those households who need help with their energy bills but are not eligible for the main energy rebate payment, the details of the discretionary scheme will be published shortly.
